Physical fitness is important to residents at the Fort Scott Presbyterian Village. Staying active can help prevent or lessen heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and more.

No matter your physical condition, you can take steps to improve your health. Numerous research studies show that it is possible for older adults to maintain or improve their strength, flexibility and physical conditioning.

Here are some examples:

  • When we’re strong enough, we can stand from a chair without help from others or lift a grandchild. Strength training results in stronger muscles.
  • Flexibility allows us to get dressed without assistance and reach for things on a shelf. Stretching aids in flexibility.
  • Being physically active can help you stay fit enough to keep doing the things you like as you get older. Aerobic exercise, like walking, can help build your endurance and overall physical conditioning.

Wellness Activities

The Centers for Disease Control cites a New Zealand study that found women 80 and older had 40 percent fewer falls with strength and balance training. Research shows strength training increases bone density and lowers the fracture risk in women older than 50.

Exercising also provides improvements in depression similar to anti-depressant medications. It isn’t known if this is because people feel better when they’re stronger or if strength training produces a helpful biochemical change in the brain. Our rehabilitation experts tell us it is most likely a combination of the two. When older adults participate in strength training programs, their self-confidence and self-esteem improve, which has a strong impact on their overall quality of life.

If you haven't been active in a while, be sure to visit with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Scheduled group activities

Fort Scott Presbyterian Village residents have an opportunity to take part in numerous individual and group activities each week.

Regularly scheduled group activities designed to improve balance include:

  • Exercise 3-5 times each week in the community room
  • Chair yoga
  • Balloon volleyball
  • Balance training

For individuals who wish to pursue wellness activities on their own, we maintain several pieces of workout equipment including:

  • NuStep machine
  • Stationary bike
  • Weights
  • Resistance bands
  • Wii fitness

Personalized programming is available. Residents who prefer fresh air with their exercise may take advantage of our walking path near the fishing pond.

For mental stimulation, there’s nothing like our regular game nights. Presbyterian Village also maintains a Wii gaming and memory system that allows participants to combine mental and physical fitness with fun.

We post a new calendar each month to keep residents apprised of times and locations of all scheduled activities.

All residents living at Presbyterian Village have a membership to the local "Health for Life" personal fitness and health center included in the amenities package. A personal trainer is available at the center to develop a plan that fits an individual's needs.
