Resident finds strength, support at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village

Colleen Lockwood, a lifetime resident of Fort Scott, Kan., came to stay at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village assisted living community for a short-term stay after a brief hospitalization last summer. Little did she know she would be surrounded by old and new friends who would encourage her each step of the way.

While at Presbyterian Village, Colleen received physical and occupational therapy a few days each week. Colleen worked with the staff to set goals to keep her on track to return to her home after building strength and confidence.

As the days passed, Colleen got involved in social events at Presbyterian Village. Socializing took her mind off her recovery and enabled her to expand her support system during this phase in her life.

Before she knew it, Colleen found that she had met all the goals and she was ready to return home.

Colleen said the hardest part of going home has been leaving all the special relationships that she formed in the few short weeks she was at the Village for her respite stay.

“The Presbyterian Village is a great place and everyone here is so very kind,” Colleen said. “I just hope I can return here if I need to in the future.”

Once Colleen returned to her home full-time, Presbyterian Village continued to monitor and follow her progress by supporting her with in-home care services to help her make a successful transition.

Many do not know that the Presbyterian Village can offer short term stays for extra support in a private apartment setting, or that the Village offers help — such as home-delivered meals, housekeeping, bathing and more — in a senior’s own home within city limits.

Often seniors think their options are limited to permanently moving into a community or relocating to be near family in another state.

The independent and assisted living setting at Presbyterian Village can provide the freedom you need to socialize and practice difficult home tasks, while also undergoing the therapy you may need to get stronger.

After joining us for a short-term stay, seniors often enjoy the programming and socialization so much they decide to make their private apartment at the Village their continued home. We offer one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments with a variety of floor plans that give seniors room to bring along furniture and family heirlooms. Some apartments even have an attached outdoor patio. A larger patio by the pond is close by for all to enjoy. The patio is a perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee on the porch swing that overlooks a beautifully landscaped pond and flower garden.

If you wonder if Presbyterian Village could be a good fit for you or a loved one, Becky Kellum would be happy to answer all your questions. She can be reached at 620-223-5550 or rkellum@pmma.org. You are also welcome to tour our community at 2401 S. Horton, Fort Scott, Kan.
